Alkaline Water Explained
Alkaline water is water with a pH above 7, usually between 8 and 10. It can be made by adding minerals (as many bottled brands do) or by electrolysis in a water ionizer. Here is a clear-eyed look at what alkaline water is, what the research says, and why people choose it.
Why people choose alkaline ionized water
- Taste. Many people find filtered, mildly alkaline water smooth and easy to drink, which makes it easier to drink more water through the day.
- Filtration built in. Every ionizer filters first, so you get cleaner-tasting water from your own tap.
- Less bottled water. Making water at home replaces cases of bottled alkaline water and the plastic that comes with them.
- Adjustable settings. Most ionizers offer several pH levels for drinking, cooking, and cleaning, plus a neutral filtered setting.
What the research says
We believe you deserve the honest picture. Independent reviews find the evidence for alkaline water is limited:
- Your body tightly controls blood pH (about 7.35–7.45). In healthy people, drinking alkaline water does not meaningfully change it.
- A 2026 review in Frontiers in Medicine concluded the effects of alkaline water are "modest and likely driven more by mineral composition than pH alone," and that claims about cancer prevention, immune enhancement, or anti-aging are unsupported.
- Some small studies suggest possible help with occasional heartburn, and some studies on mineral-rich alkaline water have looked at markers of bone health. Researchers say more and longer studies are needed.
- Mayo Clinic and Harvard Health both state that for most people, alkaline water is not better than safe plain water.

Safety notes
Mayo Clinic notes safety concerns with very high-pH water (above 9.8), including high blood potassium, which is especially risky for people with kidney disease. For everyday drinking, most people use a mild setting. Never drink the acidic stream.
Alkaline vs. hydrogen
A water ionizer's alkaline stream also contains dissolved molecular hydrogen, which is a separate topic from pH. Learn more in Hydrogen Water Explained.
