FAQ

About ionized water

What does a water ionizer do?

It filters your tap water, then uses electrolysis to split it into a mildly alkaline stream for drinking and a mildly acidic stream for cleaning. See How Water Ionizers Work.

Is ionized alkaline water safe to drink?

For most people, water at mild alkaline settings is safe to drink. Mayo Clinic notes concerns with very high-pH water (above 9.8), especially for people with kidney disease. If you have a medical condition, ask your doctor first. Never drink the acidic stream.

What pH should I drink?

Most people start at the lowest alkaline setting and adjust for taste. Use the neutral filtered setting for taking medication and for baby formula.

Does ionized water contain hydrogen?

Yes. Molecular hydrogen forms at the negative electrode, so the alkaline stream is hydrogen-rich when it leaves the faucet. It escapes over time, so drink it fresh. See Hydrogen Water Explained.

Will ionized water cure or treat a health condition?

No. Water ionizers are drinking-water appliances, not medical devices, and we do not make medical claims. You can review the research on our Research & Studies page.

Can I use reverse-osmosis or well water?

Ionizers need minerals to work, so RO water usually needs a remineralization cartridge. Well water often needs pre-filtration. Contact us with your water details and we'll help you choose.
